Buckets & windows

TokenEater tracks your Claude usage across multiple buckets, each with its own sliding window and reset. Understanding the buckets helps you read the gauges and pacing correctly.

What is a bucket?

A bucket is a usage envelope with three things:

  • A limit in tokens or cost (depending on the plan)
  • A time window over which usage is counted
  • A reset that zeroes the counter at regular intervals

Anthropic exposes multiple buckets via the API, and TokenEater displays them all independently. You can be at 95% on one and 12% on another.

Available buckets

5h session

A 5-hour sliding window. Starts as soon as you launch a first session, resets 5h later. This is the most immediate bucket - the one that blocks you during a long pair programming session.

Exposed only to Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Only appears when a session has been active in the past 5 hours.

Weekly 7d

A 7-day sliding window. Resets each week on an alignment specific to your account. This is the global envelope, your real consumption over time.

Exposed to all plans, including Free. That's why weekly pacing works even when the session bucket is empty.

Sonnet 7d

The Sonnet sub-bucket on the 7-day window. Lets you see how much of your quota goes specifically into Sonnet vs other models.

Design 7d

The Design sub-bucket on the same 7-day window. Tracks consumption on the visualization and complex reasoning side.

Opus, Cowork

Additional buckets exposed on certain plans. TokenEater displays them automatically when the API returns them.

Extra credits

When your plan includes a paid credit pool beyond the usual limits, TokenEater shows an Extra Credits card in the dashboard with used, limit, and monthly period.

Each bucket can be pinned independently in the menu bar. Settings -> Menu bar to choose which ones are visible, and in what order.
